Speaker: Shirley Jump: The Rule of Six

USING THE RULE OF SIX TO STRENGTHEN EVERYTHING FROM PLOT TO TITLES: capitalize on the technique marketing gurus have used for years to find the "thought not thought of yet" and avoid duplicating a plot line, character quirk or other idea already out there (that you may have seen subconsciously). Then learn how to use this technique to take your writing deeper and draw out more emotion, more conflict...more of everything! It's truly astounding when you see it in action. With this interactive class, New York Times bestselling author Shirley Jump will show you how to use "Shirley's Rule of Six" for everything from plot to word choice. The result? More powerful writing that has that unique touch editors today are looking to buy.

Speaker: Denise Barone: What is YA anyway?

What is YA anyway? What defines it? Is it a young girl's version of chick-lit, or is it something else entirely, and can you yourself write YA? Can you write YA even if you are, to put it kindly, a woman of a certain age? Well, as a matter of fact, you can! You just have to be able to get back in touch with your inner girl, be she a nerd, a geek, a witch, a cheerleader, or anything in between or far beyond. And you have to be willing to explore your wildest imagination. If you can do that, then you too can write YA.

Program: Using Psychology to Write Authentic Characters
Psychology is the study of behavior to help predict, explain and understand that behavior. What skills could be more valuable to a writer than being able to anticipate what a character will do in any situation, to give cause to that behavior, and to explain why the character did what he did? Sandy James’s workshop will give you some of the tools an author needs to understand some basic psychological principles so she can add depth to her characterizations.

sandy jamesSandy James is a graduate of Indiana State University (B.A.) and Indiana University-Purdue University (M.S.) Currently teaching at Greenwood High School, she has been employed as a social studies instructor for fifteen years. She is an adjunct professor of psychology to Indiana University. She is a multiple year nominee to “Who’s Who Among American Teachers?” and has been named on the “National Honor Roll of Outstanding American Teachers.” She belongs to the American Psychological Association, Association of Psychological Science, and Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools.

Speaker: Trish Milburn, Treating Writing Like Your Career

Two of the keys to succeeding in the fiction-writing business are making the time to write (no excuses!) and perseverance. It took Trish Milburn 11 years to sell her first book, most of those while also working as a writer and editor for a Nashville-based magazine and serving as a volunteer at the chapter and national levels within RWA. During those years, she learned to make the most of her time and to keep writing and submitting in the face of more rejections than she cares to remember. She'll share some of her tips and tricks to sticking with it and treating writing as a career even before you sell.
